Leadership in advancing policy-relevant knowledge about the most important challenges of international security and other critical issues where science, technology, environmental policy, and international affairs intersect.
Message from the Director
Douglas Dillon Professor of Government
On behalf of the faculty, staff and fellows of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, I welcome you to our new and expanded web site.
As the hub of Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government (KSG) for research, teaching, and training in international security affairs, environmental and natural resources issues, science and technology policy, and intrastate and ethnic conflict prevention and resolution studies, the Belfer Center vigorously pursues its mission to provide leadership in advancing policy-relevant knowledge about international security and other critical issues where science, technology, and international affairs intersect.
The Belfer Center's leadership begins with the recognition of science and technology as driving forces transforming international affairs. The Center integrates the insights of social and natural scientists, technologists, and practitioners with experience in government, diplomacy, the military, and business to address these challenges.
The Belfer Center pursues its mission in five complementary research programs: International Security; Environment and Natural Resources; Science, Technology, and Public Policy; the World Peace Foundation Program on Intrastate Conflict, Conflict Prevention, and Conflict Resolution; and Russia and the Caspian.
The Belfer Center sponsors frequent seminars, workshops, and conferences; maintains a specialized library; and publishes books, monographs, and discussion papers, as well as the quarterly journal International Security. Our continually updated web site offers a comprehensive array of these valuable, unabridged publications free of charge. You will also find helpful links to a universe of related resources.
Most important are the people who make the Belfer Center the premier policy-relevant research institution in America's finest university. The heart of the Belfer Center is our resident research community of more than 100 scholars, including Harvard faculty, analysts, practitioners, and, each year, a new, international, interdisciplinary group of research fellows. I invite you to browse our directory, where you will find biographies, publications, and current research topics for each of the individuals who make up the the Belfer Center community.
The Belfer Center is supported by an endowment established with funds from Robert and Renée Belfer, the Ford Foundation, and Harvard University; and by foundation grants, individual gifts, and occasional government grants.
Take some time to get to know us, and visit often. We welcome your comments, suggestions, thoughts, and inquiries. The Belfer Center community and I look forward to hearing from you.
Director, Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs
