Mattijs van Maasakkers is a post-doctoral research fellow in the Belfer Center's Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program. His research is focused on the role of expertise in environmental policy. His recent research projects have been on participatory river basin management in the European Union, urban climate adaptation in Durban, South Africa, and environmental restoration in Louisiana. Most recently, Van Maasakkers completed his Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In his dissertation, he examined the development of markets for ecosystem services in the United States by analyzing what kinds of new practices are emerging in the process of their creation. While at MIT, Van Maasakkers also received a Master's degree in City Planning. Before coming to MIT, he received a Master's degree in Political Science from the University of Amsterdam.
